The City: Thessaloniki

General information: Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of the region of Macedonia, the largest a nd second most populous Greek region. Thessaloniki’s honorific title is "co-capital", and stands as a reference to its historical status as the "co-reigning" city of the ByzantineEmpire, alongside Constantinople.

Thessaloniki lies on the northern fringe of the Thermaic Gulf on its eastern coast and is bound by Mount Hortiatis on its southeast. Its proximity to imposing mountain ranges, hills and fault lines, especially towards its southeast have historically made the city prone to geological changes. In 2011 reached a total of 1,006,730 inhabitants.

Thessaloniki is Greece's second major economic, industrial, commercial and political centre, and a major transportation hub for the rest of southeastern Europe; its commercial port is also of great importance for Greece and the southeastern European hinterland.
